Fun Places: State Fair at Palmer

Because of its size, Alaska has several state fairs, one of them being in Palmer which is not too far from Tawni's. We were there at the right time to go, both last year and this year.
Birchwood Christian School took their entire student body to the fair on their 3rd day of school -- brave of them! We went with them, and had a lot of fun...
Tori's teacher was very wise -- she pulled a small rope out of her backpack, and had all of her little students "hold the line". It kept them from running off and getting separated from the rest of their class.


The science building had a lot of fun 'hands on' things for the kids to play with.



As with any kids, the animal barn was a big favorite :) They had a great little petting zoo in there, and the kids enjoyed feeding and petting the baby animals.



There were baby chicks in one incubator, and eggs that were hatching in another. I wasn't able to get any really good pictures of the ones hatching out of their shells, but the kids were all having a ball watching them :)


We stayed behind when the rest of the school left the fair that day, and Tawni let the kids have one ride. She and Kent took the them back on another day and they spent several hours there.


Roger and I also went back later (on '$2 Tuesday') with my mom. It was kind of a drizzly day, but we had a good time, and went to lots of exhibit buildings that we never got to when we went last year.

The logging show was a lot of fun to watch :)





One of the entertainment groups on the outdoor stage was "ShaeLaurel", a family of fiddlers from Florida (how's that for a tongue twister?!). Those kids had more energy....! They were extremely good!!


They have a "giant vegetable" contest every year. Because of the rainy/overcast summer days this year, there were not as many vegetables entered, and the ones that were there were smaller than last year. This was a 60 pound cabbage.
